This past fall, St. John’s initiated a new ministry that seeks to foster the understanding, practice and
appreciation of the arts. This ministry is called “Enliven! The Arts Ministry of St. John’s Lutheran Church. “Enliven” is now planning its inaugural event: a weekend arts festival on Pentecost weekend, May 22 and 23.
The festival will include the following events:
(1) Stained Glass: The new stained glass windows that will adorn the entryway to St. Johns will be dedicated and the congregation will have the opportunity to meet
Charlotte Paul, the designer of the windows.
(2) Art Show: During this weekend the fellowship hall will be turned into an art gallery for our first art
show at St. John’s featuring the work of Paula Wallace, a well known local artist who is active at the Hot Shops
in Omaha. Paula will discuss her work on Saturday.
(3) Lute Program: There will be a presentation of lute music and sacred poetry featuring Kenneth Bé,
the outstanding lute player from Omaha.
(4) Keynote Address: William Woeger, the Executive Director Cathedral Arts Project in Omaha, will
give a keynote address entitled “the Divine Artist.” Woeger is a nationally recognized liturgical consultant as
well as a distinguished artist and iconographer.
(5) Film: The acclaimed film “Babette’s Feast” will be shown on Saturday afternoon with a discussion
to follow. This film depicts the impact that a world-class French chef has on the lives of a conservative
religious community on the coast of Denmark. It is an uplifting and insightful film that will teach us all about
the value and meaning of celebration in our lives.
(6) Children’s Art Workshop: Our own Diane Warrick will lead a visual art workshop for children
ages Kindergarten through 2nd grade.
(7) Special Worship Services:
Morning Prayer and Vespers – Saturday, May 22nd
Opening and closing the Saturday events will be short services featuring
various art forms
Pentecost Sunday, May 23rd – One Service, 10:30 a.m.
This will be a special service involving jazz, poetry, visual art and dance.
This will be a fun event for everyone, so bring the whole family. You may
register for the Arts Festival following worship each Sunday in May or by
calling the church office. Pre-Registration for the festival is not mandatory, but
it is strongly encouraged as a way to help the Enliven committee plan.
The registration form is found in the newsletter. You can come for the whole
day or drop in and spend as much time as you wish. We hope that you can
attend this truly enlivening arts event!
